England captain Williamson set to make Lionesses return

-

England captain Leah Williamson is expected to shrug off a knee injury and make her Lionesses comeback against Sweden in Euro 2025 qualifying tomorrow night.

The Arsenal centre-half was a doubt after coming off at half-time during the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Chelsea in the League Cup final on Sunday.

But she trained yesterday and is in line to make her first England appearance for 11 months after missing the World Cup due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

Wiegman said: “Where she comes from, she is still building, but she is in a good place and is ready, if she comes through today, of course.

“It is really good that she is back, first of all for herself, because she was so excited to come back.

“It is good to have another quality player in the squad. But I think we were in a good place already and now we are in an even better place.”

Wiegman’s side hammered Sweden 4-0 in the semi-finals at Euro 2022 but, two years on, England go into qualifying for next summer’s event on the back of missing out on the Paris Olympics.

She added: “That [2022] was then and it was a great moment, but we’ve moved on. A lot of things have happened between then and now.

“After [losing] the World Cup final we were playing in the Nations League, trying to qualify for the Olympics. When we knew we couldn’t qualify we wanted to reset and get ready for the first game [of Euro 2025 qualifying] against Sweden.

“Since the [qualifying] draw we’ve been focused fully on the qualifiers against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland – because you can’t prepare in just a few days.”

Goalkeeper Khiara Keating has pulled out of the squad and returned to Manchester City due to injury. Southampton’s Kayla Rendell has been named as her replacement.
