Cesc Fabregas was today handed his first senior coaching role after being appointed interim boss at Serie B side Como.
The former Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona and Spain midfielder was coaching the club’s Under-19 team but steps up to replace Moreno Longo, who was sacked despite the club sitting sixth in the standings.
A club statement read: “Como 1907 and Moreno Longo have parted company. The search for a new head coach begins immediately with Cesc Fàbregas and the current coaching staff taking over duties for the interim period.
“Following several months of strategic planning, the board decided that a dynamic change was in the best interests of the club.
“Cesc Fàbregas who currently coaches Como 1907 Primavera will take his first training session on Wednesday morning.”

Longo joined Como 14 months ago and helped them avoid relegation last season, finishing 13th, before guiding them to the brink of the promotion spots in the early stages of the 2023/24 campaign.
Mirwan Suwarso, official representative of the club’s ownership group said: “We thank Moreno Longo for all his hard work and dedication, especially after coming in following a difficult period last season.
“However, we would like to embark on a new path that hopefully will provide more excitement and entertainment for the fans in Como and beyond. We hope to make a new appointment for the head coach position in the near future.
“We thank the fans for understanding and their unwavering loyalty and support. As always, Forza Como.”
