Carragher says Everton’s 10-point penalty is ‘excessive’

-

Jamie Carragher says Everton’s 10-point penalty for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) is “excessive”.

The ruling was announced today after a five-day hearing last month at which an independent commission determined the club had exceeded by £19.5million the £105m threshold permitted for the period ending at the culmination of the 2021/22 season.

The punishment sees the Toffees slip to 19th in the Premier League table, two points from safety and in relegation danger. The club have already outlined their intention to appeal.

Former Liverpool defender, and Sky Sports pundit, Carragher claims Everton have paid the price for transparency in a clear reference to Manchester City, who were accused by the Premier League of not co-operating with an investigation that saw the European champions charged in February with 115 breaches of financial regulations over a nine-year period.

He wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “The 10 point deduction for Everton is excessive & not right, considering they have been working with the PL about this for the last couple of years.

“Would it have been better to be evasive & try & drag it out like other clubs?

“No doubt relegated clubs will have put big pressure on the PL to deal with Everton, but when you consider 6 clubs tried to leave the PL & there was no sanction at all it doesn’t feel right.

“Until other clubs are sanctioned Everton will feel they are being used to show there is no need for an independent regulator, and they are right.”

The guilty verdict opens the door for Leeds, Leicester and Burnley to follow through on their intention to sue the club for damages after they suffered relegation over the past two seasons while Everton survived.
