Brighton and Hove Albion and Republic of Ireland international striker, Evan Ferguson, has described himself as ‘all good’ and fully fit for the Irish national side ahead of their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier at home to Greece on Friday evening.
The 18-year-old sensation has had an excellent start to his club career with Brighton in the Premier League but missed both of Ireland’s crucial qualifying matches against France and the Netherlands last month; which they lost and have subsequently seen their hopes of reaching the UEFA European Championships in Germany next summer almost ended.
France lead Group B on 15 points with five wins out of five, whilst the Netherlands and Greece sit level on nine points apiece with Ireland on six and Gibraltar rock-bottom with no points collected.
It would take an extraordinary sequence of results for the Irish to automatically qualify for the tournament involving Ireland winning all three of their remaining matches as well as Greece losing to France but sharing a draw with the Dutch, whilst the Dutch also lost to France and then fail to beat Gibraltar in their final match.
Bettystown-born Ferguson began his youth career with St Kevin’s Boys and Bohemians before making just three professional appearances for Bohs. He joined Brighton’s under-21 setup in 2021 before making his Premier League debut in 2022.
Since that debut, at the age of just 18 he has scored ten goals in 28 appearances in England’s top-flight with several of those appearances coming off the bench. He reached double figures in all competitions for The Seagulls last season, notching ten in 25.
For his country, he made his international debut in November 2022 against Norway in an international friendly. He has scored two goals in six caps for ‘The Boys in Green’ so far in his fledgling career.
