German Bundesliga side, Mainz 05, are set to take the decision to terminate Anwar El Ghazi’s contract, after comments he made with regards to the going conflict between Israel and Palestine.
The 28-year-old winger posted a pro-Palestinian message on social media, which included the line ‘from the river to the sea’ which could result in a criminal prosecution in Germany as it is viewed as inciting hatred against Jewish people.
The Bundesliga club described the post as ‘unacceptable’ and will now leave the club, having made just one appearance since signing for them earlier this month.
He was a free agent after leaving PSV Eindhoven this summer and only gained a contract with ‘Die Nullfunfer’ at the start of this Autumn.
El Ghazi began his youth career with BVV Barendrecht before joining Feyenoord, Spartaan ’20, Sparta Rotterdam and then onto Ajax, where he started his professional career.
After three seasons with the Dutch giants, he moved on to Ligue 1 side, Lille, before a loan spell at then Championship Aston Villa before a permanent move to The Villains the following summer.
He signed for Everton loan in the January in 2022 but only made two appearances for The Toffees before becoming a free agent that summer and then spending a season with PSV, where he scored nine goals in 33 appearances.
Mainz are currently rock-bottom in the Bundesliga table with just two points collected in their opening eight matches and they have managed to score just seven goals in that time, too. They face Bochum in the ninth match of their season on Friday evening.
The news of El Ghazi follows on from Algerian defender, Youcef Atal, being suspended due to a social media post of his own and is now being investigated by French prosecutors for allegedly posting an antisemitic video.
