Malky Mackay Sacked By Ross County

-

Scottish Premiership club Ross County have officially announced that they have sacked manager Malky Mackay as they battle against relegation from the top-flight.

Ross County’s 1-0 defeat to Saint Johnstone at the weekend was their ninth match without a victory in all competitions as they head into the November international break sitting eleventh in the table in the relegation playoff.

The Staggies narrowly avoided relegation last season, under Mackay, needing penalties to defeat Partick Thistle over two legs in the end of season relegation/promotion playoffs.

51-year-old Bellshill-born Mackay has been in charge at Dingwall since 2021 after spending six years out of club management.

The former Norwich City defender began his managerial career with another club from his playing career, Watford. He was caretaker at The Hornets in 2008 before taking charge for two seasons between 2009 and 2011.

After the takeover of the club by the Pozzo family, Mackay departed Vicarage Road for Cardiff City. Whilst with The Bluebirds, he led them to promotion to the Premier League in 2013 before being sacked mid-way through that season after text messages were leaked in which Mackay allegedly used racist language.

Mackay found himself back in club management less than 12 months later, though, taking charge of 2013 FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic in the Championship. He was sacked in April 2015 and spent two and a half years without a job.

In October 2017, he became caretaker manager of the Scottish national team but took charge of just one game between then and February 2018.

Assistant manager Don Cowie, who played for Mackay at Cardiff City, is the current favourite for the Ross County job. Whoever takes charge will likely be in place after the November international break when Ross have two home matches, against Kilmarnock and Saint Mirren, in the space of three days.
