Reports suggest that Liverpool still harbour hopes of making a daring move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe in the upcoming summer. The French international’s future once again took the spotlight during the summer transfer window when he communicated to PSG that he would not activate the 12-month contract extension. Mbappe had initially committed to a two-year deal at Parc des Princes in the summer of 2022, meaning he is set to become a free agent next summer if he doesn’t renew for an additional 12 months.
In response to Mbappe’s unexpected decision, PSG took various measures to facilitate his sale over the summer. These measures included sidelining him from the first team and accepting a record-breaking offer from Al-Hilal. Nevertheless, Mbappe firmly rejected any idea of moving to Saudi Arabia and consistently maintained his commitment to seeing out his current contract before deciding on his future next summer. Although Luis Enrique eventually reintegrated the former Monaco starlet into the main squad, his contract situation remains unresolved, and as it stands, he will depart without a transfer fee in 2024.
A free transfer to Real Madrid seems the most plausible outcome for Mbappe, given their substantial interest in him over the past two summer transfer windows. However, there are reports that Liverpool are also in the mix, as they were previously linked with the 24-year-old before he extended his contract in the French capital last year.
Notably, Liverpool’s interest is contingent on the prospect of signing Mbappe as a free agent; they are unlikely to pursue a deal if a transfer fee is involved. Allegedly, this possibility has put Liverpool’s top decision-makers on high alert. The Merseyside club is even said to be optimistic about luring the World Cup winner to the Premier League, as they have maintained continuous communication with his representatives since their unsuccessful attempt to sign him in 2017.
