Julian Nagelsmann has been tipped as the leading contender to replace Hansi Flick as Germany head coach, should the latter be removed from his post by the DFB.
Assistant to World Cup winning head coach Joachim Low for eight years between 2006-2014 and Low’s replacement in August 2021, Flick has not had the success expected of him as head coach and after a long run of bad results, his time may be running out.
According to Sport Bild, the DFB may look to sack the former Bayern Munich boss if Germany disappoint in their two upcoming friendlies against Japan and France during the current international break, with Nagelsmann under consideration as a potential replacement.
Nagelsmann, who built his reputation following successful spells at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig is currently out of work after being sacked by Bayern Munich back in March with the ‘Rekordmeiser’ second in the Bundesliga, despite Nagelsmann having delivered the ‘Meisterschale’ in his one full season in charge. He left with a win ratio of 71.4% over the course of his time at the club.
The 36-year-old’s stock is still extremely high though and Flick was to be removed from his post, then Nagelsmann would likely be a popular appointment. Other options, such as former Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Oliver Glasner and Matthias Sammer could also be explored.
Flick, a former Champions League winning head coach with Bayern just over three years ago had begun life as Germany boss extremely well, winning his first eight fixtures. However, things have badly tailed off since and ‘Die Mannschaft’ have won just four of their last 16 games, also suffering an embarrassing group stage exit in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. German supporters are losing patience and apparently, so too are the DFB.
