Macclesfield FC have confirmed that they have reached a deal to sign former Everton striker Oumar Niasse on a short-term deal, subject to league approval.
The 30-year-old forward could make his Macclesfield debut as soon as Saturday afternoon as The Silkmen take on Guiseley at the Leasing.com Stadium in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
Niasse, who began his professional career by scoring 102 goals in 154 appearances for his hometown c;ub US Ouakam in the Senegalese top-flight, moved to Europe in 2012 when he joined Norwegian Eliteserien side, Brann.
In the 2013/14 campaign, he scored 12 goals in 34 Turkish Super Lig matches for Akhisar Belediyespor before moving to the Russian Premier League, joining Lokomotiv Moscow. Five goals in seven appearances during the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League campaign provoked the attention of Premier League side, Everton
Niasse was contracted to The Toffees between January 2016 and the summer of 2020. He failed to ever consistently play. However, he did manage to score eight goals in 22 Premier League appearances in the 2017/18 campaign, under the management of Sam Allardyce.
The season before that he had gone on loan to Hull City in the January of 2017 and then the season after he moved to Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City, scoring five goals in 32 appearances across those two stints combined.
In 2021, he joined Huddersfield Town in the Championship but didn’t make an appearance for The Terriers before spells at Burton Albion in 2022 and then Morecambe in 2023 League One.
Internationally, Niasse played for Senegal between 2013 and 2018, scoring three goals in nine caps for his country but he missed out on selection for the squad ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Macclesfield, who were reformed in 2021 after being wound up in September 2020, are currently owned by Robert Smethurst with Robbie Savage also an investor and on the board with the club.
Under the management of former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Neil Danns, Macclesfield won the Northern Premier League Division One West title last season, earning promotion to the aforementioned Northern Premier League Premier Division. Danns left at the end of last season and was replaced by former Sheffield United midfielder Mark Duffy but Duffy was recently sacked with Alex Bruce, formerly of Hull City and the son of Steve Bruce, being appointed to the role.
