Emma Hayes described the officiating as “embarrassing” after her Chelsea side were denied victory at Real Madrid.
Chelsea led 2-1 in the Champions League Group D clash at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano with 15 minutes to go only for the hosts to be awarded a penalty when Jessie Fleming was adjudged to have fouled Athenea del Castillo inside the area when the offence took place at least a yard outside with the player’s momentum pushing her forward.
Olga Carmona slotted home from the spot to level it but, if that wasn’t enough to frustrate the Blues, there was more to come when Niamh Charles’ 95th-minute strike was chalked off for offside despite the player being clearly on.
Chelsea striker Sam Kerr was in an offside position but not interfering with play.
Hayes, who will take over as the USA Women’s national team coach at the end of the season, was furious, saying: “We scored a legitimate goal with Niamh Charles three or four yards onside. It’s embarrassing.
“I had to check why the goal was disallowed.
“I then watched it back, Sam’s about eight yards away from the goalkeeper, she’s nowhere near her. I cannot understand the decision whatsoever. I think we’ve been robbed.”

On the penalty call, she added: “I could see from the bench it was outside the box, so I’m absolutely shocked that those managing the game couldn’t see that.
“I can’t remember the last time I’ve been in a game like that where two humongous decisions have gone against us.”
