The State of Play
The 2013 FA Cup champions are poised for the third round of the FA Cup, presenting an opportunity to craft another memorable chapter in the annals of this esteemed competition. Wigan have advanced to this stage with a triumph over League One rivals Exeter City in the first round, followed by a victory over National League side York City.
Under the guidance of manager Shaun Maloney, The Latics have navigated their way into mid-table in League One after starting the season with an eight-point deduction. However, the limited size of Wigan’s squad has hindered their progress, and they find themselves in a potential relegation battle, although the likelihood of falling into the bottom four is slim.

It’s something of a marvel that Manchester United is within striking distance of the top seven in the Premier League in what could be argued as one of the most challenging post-Sir Alex Ferguson seasons. The year concluded with a 2-1 defeat at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest, perpetuating their challenging campaign.
The Red Devils have participated in 28 matches across all competitions this season, securing just 12 victories. Among these wins, only two have been by more than one goal, and the remainder often required late winning goals or dramatic turnarounds – signs that may not be indicative of a team with a sustainable plan.
Team News
Shaun Maloney will face the challenge of missing several defensive players in the upcoming clash against Manchester United, as Tom Pearce, Arsenal loanee Omar Rekik and Jason Kerr all continue to be unavailable for The Latics.
Key forward Stephen Humphrys is uncertain for the upcoming fixture, having sat out their 1-1 draw with Barnsley on New Year’s Day, and Scott Smith’s availability remains questionable as he was also absent from that match.

Erik ten Hag has confirmed Andre Onana’s involvement, with the Cameroonian international postponing his departure for the Africa Cup of Nations. However, the Dutch manager will still be without several key first-team players.
The return of Harry Maguire, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia is imminent, while Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Victor Lindelof and Rasmus Hojlund remain doubtful after missing recent matches. Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez have returned to first-team training this week.
Expected Line-ups
Wigan Athletic: Tickle; Clare, Hughes, Morrison, Sessegnon; Shaw, Adeeko; Godo, Lang, Jones; Magennis
Manchester United: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Evans, Dalot; Mainoo, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Rashford
What they Said
Shaun Maloney
“We prepare the majority of the season against League One sides but in any team – whether they are in our division, the Championship or the Premier League – there will be areas defensively you can see you can try to take advantage of.”
Erik ten Hag on recently meeting with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other members of INEOS:
“Very positive. We had a long meeting, many hours we sat together. On many issues we are on the same page. They have good ideas. It was very constructive. We have to see what we can integrate.”
When and How to Watch
This match is being televised live on ITV1, and can be streamed on ITVX platforms.
Prediction
Wigan, known for their consistent playing style regardless of the opponent, may face challenges due to this approach. While some teams in League One can effectively take on Manchester United, there’s concern that Wigan’s lack of experience and potential fatigue could be detrimental, especially considering their poor defensive record in terms of shots against. Despite Manchester United’s season characterised by a lack of fluency and cohesion, a somewhat unremarkable away win at the DW Stadium seems the most probable outcome.
