Sevilla defender Gonzalo Montiel is set to join Nottingham Forest on an initial loan deal with an option to buy for around £9.5 million at the end of the season.
The 26 year-old right-back is reportedly travelling to England today in order to undergo a medical and complete his move to the City Ground.
Montiel began his youth career with River Plate and then played for the Argentinian giants for five years between 2016 and 2021, making 139 appearances and scoring six goals for Los Millonarios.
After that, he joined Sevilla but has struggled to nail down a starting spot ahead of the club captain and former Manchester City winger Jesus Navas. He has still managed 72 appearances for the club across all competitions since he joined the Andalusians.
Arguably most famously Montiel is known for scoring the winning penalty for Argentina, who he has collected 23 caps for, in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France in Qatar and then six months later repeating the act for Sevilla against Roma in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League final.
He will become Nottingham Forest’s fifth first-team signing of the summer. Chris Wood had his loan deal from Newcastle United made permanent before Ola Aina joined on a free transfer from Torino, Anthony Elanga signed for £15 million from Manchester United and then Matt Turner arrived from Arsenal for around £7 million.
It is expected that Forest are among the busiest clubs in the final weeks of the window with interest in several positions. They are keen on a left-back and have been linked with Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares and also want a central midfielder with a supposed offer for Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana turned down. Rumours also persist that forward Brennan Johnson could be on his way with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brentford all linked.
