FPL 2023-24 – Gameweek 2 Goalkeepers

-

With one eye on Gameweek 2, we take a look at the top-performing fantasy goalkeepers after the opening weekend of Premier League action.

Andre Onana (£5.0m) was a hugely popular choice for FPL managers prior to Gameweek 1, and his ownership is only set to increase following the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday. The Cameroonian made six saves on his way to a clean sheet in an impressive debut, although it has to be said he was somewhat fortunate not to give away a penalty. Erik ten Hag’s face Tottenham on Gameweek 2, an opponent Man Utd haven’t lost to in almost three years.

Onana’s nine-point return was not the highest of the gameweek among goalkeepers however, with that honour belonging to Bernd Leno (£4.5m). The Fulham number one was a busy man against Everton on Saturday, but was in stubborn mood as he made an impressive nine saves to shut the Toffees out. Maximum bonus raised Leno’s gameweek total to 12 points, and he will now look to back that up against Brentford this weekend.

Fellow budget stopper Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) likewise kept a clean sheet on Matchday 1, as Crystal Palace ran out 0-1 winners against newly-promoted Sheffield Utd. The Eagles entertain last season’s Premier League runners-up Arsenal on Gameweek 2 though, so it will be a tough ask for Johnstone to keep a second consecutive clean sheet.

The only other shutout in Gameweek 1 was recorded by reigning champions Man City, who opened the Premier League season with a 0-3 victory at Burnley on Friday. Ederson (£5.5m) owners will be hoping that this is the first of many, as paying a premium price for a goalkeeper can be a risky strategy if it doesn’t pay off.

If you want to pay less for your goalkeeper and target saves rather than clean sheets, then Sheffield Utd’s Wes Foderingham (£4.5m) could be your man. As already mentioned, the Blades suffered defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend, but Foderingham’s seven saves in that contest pushed his FPL score up to four points – the highest amongst goalkeepers who conceded on Matchday 1. A trip to Nottingham Forest awaits Sheffield Utd in Gameweek 2.
