We look at a selection of defenders and assess their FPL standings ahead of Gameweek 4, which begins this Friday evening with Luton’s first home league fixture of the season.
Chelsea kept their first clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 3 but not only that, their full-backs remained key weapons in the Blues’ offence. Malo Gusto (£4.1m) continued to deputise for Reece James at right-back and made a mockery of his price-tag with two assists and 14 FPL points. On the opposite flank Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) was arguably more attacking than Gusto, getting into hugely dangerous positions but ultimately not making them count, one miss in particular a glaring one. At home to Nottingham Forest in Gameweek 4, it could wind up being another profitable one for owners of those two.
On the back of two consecutive Premier League clean sheets, fantasy managers are beginning to take note of Spurs defenders. One player especially who is courting attention is left-back Destiny Udogie (£4.6m). Another cheaper asset, Udogie backed up his 5 FPL points in Gameweek 2 against Man Utd with a 12-point-haul vs Bournemouth after picking up an assist to go with his clean sheet. A visit to point-less Burnley awaits Ange Postecoglou’s side in Gameweek 4, an attractive fixture on paper for Udogie’s ever-growing ownership.
Full-backs were a big source of FPL points across the Premier League in Gameweek 3 and none more so than at Aston Villa. Matty Cash (£4.6m), bagged a brace from right-back against Burnley, racking up a whopping 17 fantasy points despite his side not keeping a clean sheet. On the opposite flank, Lucas Digne (£4.5m) backed up his hat-trick of assists in the Europa Conference League a few days earlier, by setting up another goal at Turf Moor. Whilst the Villains have shut out their opponents just once so far in three gameweeks, the attacking prowess of their two full-backs makes them extremely enticing for FPL managers ahead of Aston Villa’s Gameweek 4 clash away at Liverpool.
