Following Leicester’s relegation to the Championship last season, the writing was on the wall for James Maddison when it came to his Foxes career. One of a number of Leicester stars who departed the club, Maddison was snapped up by Tottenham for a reported fee of £40m.
From an FPL perspective, Maddison has been a popular choice for a number of seasons now. Due to his ability from dead-ball situations, the England international was a frequent provider of assists, but a keen eye for goal ensured that he was an excellent source of FPL points. He has raised his game in that department over the last two seasons, reaching double figures for goals in both 2021-22 and 2022-23 Premier League campaigns.
With Spurs needing a number ten to form the creative hub of their team, Maddison was an obvious fit given his Premier League pedigree. The loss of Harry Kane does change things somewhat, as you would have imagined the England colleagues would have linked up to good effect this season. However, this could actually go in Maddison’s favour when it comes to his FPL output. With Kane having been Spurs’ main source of goals for a number or years now, Maurizio Pochettino will now need the rest of his side to contribute more in that department. Maddison has proven at Leicester that he has this in his locker, so don’t be surprised to see him regularly chipping in with goals in this campaign.
Maddison’s debut for Spurs saw him record two assists in the North London side’s 2-2 draw with Brentford – a sign of things to come for Maddison owners, perhaps. Indeed, almost 250k fantasy managers have already seen fit to transfer in the 26-year-old ahead of Gameweek 2, and another positive showing against Man Utd this weekend would see his ownership increase significantly.
