FPL 2023-24 – Spotlight On Luis Diaz Ahead Of Gameweek 8

-

With the Gameweek 8 deadline starting to loom in the distance, we shine a spotlight on Liverpool midfielder Luis Diaz (£7.5m), whose disallowed goal was the subject of major controversy last weekend and could prove the catalyst for a big fantasy haul ahead during the next round of Premier League fixtures.

After finding the net in each of the opening two gameweeks, Luis Diaz has found attacking returns very hard to come by since. Fast forward to Double Gameweek 7 and he appeared to have got himself back on the scoresheet, finishing smartly against Spurs following Mohamed Salah’s inch-perfect through ball. However, the assistant referee’s flag halted the celebrations immediately.

It seemed that the offside decision would be overturned after the VAR pictures showed Diaz as clearly onside. However, in what was later described as a “significant human error” by the PGMOL, the check was completed, the offside call stood and play restarted. So, Diaz remains without a Premier League goal since Gameweek 2 and to add insult to injury, Liverpool were ultimately beaten 2-1 by Spurs after conceding an own goal in the dying embers of second half stoppage time.

Diaz is expected to line-up from the start again for the Reds in Gameweek 8, which sees them face Brighton away from home, who like Liverpool were in Europa League action Thursday night but last weekend ended up getting thrashed 6-1 at the hands of Aston Villa. After the injustice in North London, Liverpool and Diaz must be chomping at the bit to get out onto the pitch and put things right. The Colombian will no doubt be desperate to put the ball in the net once again and banish some demons. In the process, he could end up delivering his FPL ownership a significant points-haul in Gameweek 8.
