It has been reported that Liverpool have made a last-ditch effort to try and sign Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia but the expectation remains that the Belgian will join The Reds’ Premier League rivals Chelsea.
According to Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur, The Blues are closing in on the signing of the 19 year-old for a fee in the region of £60 million, despite Liverpool having also reached an agreement for the Brussels-born defensive midfielder.
Lavia has been the subject of Liverpool interest throughout the summer with Southampton rejecting three offers prior to these latest developments. He signed for The Saints last summer for a fee of around £10 million from Manchester City.
If he does eventually make the move to Stamford Bridge, his arrival will follow Moises Caicedo in choosing to move to the Londoners instead of Liverpool, despite Jurgen Klopp’s side having agreed deals with Brighton and Southampton respectively.
Caicedo and Lavia signing for Chelsea will take their summer spending past the £350 million mark with Deivid Washington also set to join from Santos, talks ongoing for Michael Olise and a desire to still sign a goalkeeper and a striker in the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window.
That will take Chelsea’s spending to over £1 billion in just three transfer windows since their takeover last May by Clearlake Capital, headed up by club chairman Todd Boehly.
