Chelsea chasing City’s Cole Palmer

-

Chelsea are interested in signing Manchester City winger Cole Palmer in the final few days of the summer transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino spoke of his desire to sign a versatile attacker before the deadline, following The Blues’ first win of the season last Friday evening when they hammered Luton Town by three goals to nil at Stamford Bridge.

Now it appears that Manchester City’s academy product Palmer is on their shortlist as they seek to compliment the likes of Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Jackson who have been carrying a heavy load in the opening weeks of the season due to injuries.

The 21 year-old winger, born in Wythenshawe, began his Manchester City youth career at the age of just eight years old and broke into the first-team in 2020.

Since signing his first professional contract, he has made 41 appearances for the Cityzens, scoring six goals across all competitions, including two this season in the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup so far.

At international level, he has represented England’s U15, U16, U17, U18 and U21 sides and was a part of the under-21 squad that won the UEFA U21 European Championships this summer.

It is believed that any move for Palmer would cost in the region of £30 million with Brighton and Hove Albion as well as West Ham United reportedly holding an interest. It would also be expected that this would be Chelsea’s final signing of the summer.

It has been an extremely busy summer for the Londoners, both in terms of outgoings and incomings. They are nearing £1 billion in transfer spend in just three transfer windows since Todd Boehly led the Clearlake Capital takeover of the club in May 2022.

Chelsea have raised over £200 million in player sales with the first-team departures of N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Kai Havertz, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Datro Fofana, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Hakim Ziyech and Lewis Hall. Romelu Lukaku is set to depart on loan to Roma, whilst Marc Cucurella is the subject of interest from Manchester United and the likes of Conor Gallagher, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Malang Sarr could all also move on.

In terms of incomings, they are estimated to have spent over £400 million this summer with youngsters Deivid Washington and Angelo Gabriel joining from Brazilian Serie A side Santos. Djordje Petrovic, Lesley Ugochukwu, Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Robert Sanchez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia have all also joined.
