League Two side Morecambe have confirmed that their manager, Derek Adams, has left the club with immediate effect as he looks to ‘pursue an opportunity elsewhere’.
In a statement on Monday morning, The Shrimps confirmed that the Board of Directors wanted to keep Adams but a contractual release clause had been met and he would be on his way.
It is believed that Scottish Premiership strugglers Ross County are the club that will soon be announcing the appointment of Derek Adams, following the sacking of former Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic boss Malky Mackay last week.
Adams, who played for the likes of Aberdeen, Burnley, Motherwell, Ayr United and Livingston, spent a large chunk of his playing career with Ross County before beginning his managerial career with them as player-manager between 2007 and 2010. He returned as the manager once again between 2011 and 2014. He won the 2008 Second Division title and 2012 First Division title with Ross and also led them as they finished runners’ up in the 2009/10 Scottish Cup, losing to Dundee United in the final.
He moved to England in 2015 and spent four years in charge of Plymouth Argyle, which included promotion from League Two with The Pilgrims. In 2019, he was appointed manager of Morecambe and managed to keep them in the EFL before then pulling off one of the most surprising promotions in EFL history as they reached the third-tier of English football for the first time ever via the League Two playoffs.
He surprisingly departed the club that summer, though, in 2021, to return to League Two with Bradford City. After an underwhelming stint with The Bantams, Adams was back at Morecambe by the end of the 2021/22 campaign and helped them pull off a great escape from relegation before eventually overseeing their relegation in 2023. He leaves the club sitting ninth in the table, just two points off the top seven and the playoff places.
Ross County are currently second from bottom in the Scottish Premiership table, which is where they finished last season before they defeated Partick Thistle in the end of season playoffs to avoid relegation.
