Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking ahead of his side’s home game with Hoffenheim tomorrow night – their first following the short winter break, said: “He’s a specialist at centre-back. He has also played as a number six in the Premier League, but not anymore for a long time.
“We’re getting him for the centre-back position, he can play right or left centre-back as well as in a back three. We got him mainly so Leon Goretzka can be free to play in midfield and doesn’t have to switch to centre-back anymore.”
Tuchel is hoping for further reinforcements once Dier is confirmed following a medical.
He added: “Patience is not my biggest strength. Every coach always wants to have every player with him on the first day, but that’s never going to happen.
“I’m more patient than I used to be. I know how complicated transfers have become. There are a number of parties involved and it’s become extremely complex.
“We’re always trying to get things done, not just transfers but other things too. We’re extremely ambitious.”

Bayern are four points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen but Tuchel is up for the fight having been encouraged by what he has seen on the training pitch over the past week.
“As well as Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Leipzig have the chance to go on a real run,” he said.
“We can close the gap to Leverkusen on Friday. We’ve been playing at a really high standard, but can still improve in the opposition half and with our Gegenpressing.
“I feel that we’ve taken a step in the right direction over the last week. We want to start a run with our three home games at the beginning of the year. Our aim is clear: We want to win the league!”
