Gabri Veiga Linked With January Move

-

Former Celta Vigo midfielder, Gabri Veiga, is already being linked with a move away from the Saudi Pro League during the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old Galician moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli in the summer for 40 million euros, which was his release clause at Celta.

However, there have been suggestions that he would return to the Primera Division struggler on loan in January, whilst there have also been suggestions from people reportedly close to the attacking midfielder that he is the subject of interest from clubs in the UEFA Champions League but remains ‘fully focused and committed to Al Ahli’,

Since joining Al Ahli in the summer, who are coached by former Red Bull Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle, Veiga has scored one goal in ten Pro League appearances.

Al Ahli are one of the ‘big four’ in Saudi football and were one of the teams that were heavily funded by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in the summer, alongside Al Ittihad, Al Hilal and Al Nassr.

They were surprisingly relegated from the top-flight in 2022 but gained promotion at the first attempt last season, allowing them to benefit from the funding. Alongside Gabri Veiga, they also signed the likes of Edouard Mendy, Roger Ibanez, Riyad Mahrez, Merih Demiral, Allan Saint-Maximin, Franck Kessie and Roberto Firmino.

They have been relatively underwhelming in the opening 13 matches of the season, failing to win five of them and sitting nine points behind unbeaten Al Hilal at the top-of-the-table.

Gabri Veiga began his career with Celta’s B team in 2019, making 64 appearances for them before establishing himself as a Celta regular in La Liga in the 2022/23 campaign, helping them avoid relegation on the final day of the season with 11 goals in 36 matches.

The likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have been strongly linked with a move in the past, whilst Italian champions Napoli were reportedly on the verge of signing him in the summer before Al Ahli swooped.
