Several reports have suggested that Scotland are hoping to persuade Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon to switch allegiances from England ahead of UEFA EURO 2024.
Steve Clarke’s Scots have already ensured qualification for the tournament in Germany next summer and the former West Bromwich Albion boss is keen on strengthening the pool of players he has to choose from.
Gordon, who joined Newcastle United for a fee believed to be in the region of £40 million in January 2023 from Everton, has represented England at youth level and was a key part of the England U21 side that won the UEFA U21 European Championships in the summer.
The 22-year-old Liverpool-born winger has represented England at U18, U19 and U20 level as well as the aforementioned U21’s. He has made a total of 34 youth caps, scoring eight goals.
He has enjoyed an impressive start to the 2023/24 campaign for The Magpies as they try and balance European commitments as well as being as competitive as possible at the top end of the Premier League.
Gordon is the third Newcastle player in recent months to be the subject of a supposed tussle between England and Scotland ahead of UEFA EURO 2024.
Harvey Barnes, who moved from Leicester City in the summer for £38 million and has already been capped by England at first-team level is also reportedly considering his international future.
Elliot Anderson is another who may be going in the opposite direction with the midfielder having been called up to senior Scotland squads in the past but now supposedly of interest to Gareth Southgate. Anderson, born in Whitley Bay, has represented Scotland at U16, U17, U18 and U21 level but played once for England’s U19 side.
Gordon recently missed out on the latest England squad with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Ollie Watkins, Jarrod Bowen and Harry Kane preferred in attack for their final UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying matches against Malta and North Macedonia.
