Tottenham have announced the signing of Timo Werner on a loan deal from RB Leipzig, with the Premier League club possessing an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.
Spurs will reportedly cover the 27-year-old’s full salary for the remainder of 2023-24, with Sky Sports in Germany claiming they will pay £15.5million (€18m) should they wish to extend Werner’s stay beyond the end of the season.
Germany forward Werner was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United earlier in January, but he will now provide cover and competition in attack for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, who could be without captain Son Heung-min until mid-February due to his involvement in the Asian Cup.

The attacker rejoined Leipzig in 2022, two years after leaving the club for Chelsea, for whom he made 89 appearances across two seasons, scoring 23 goals in all competitions.
Werner was part of Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side which beat Manchester City in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final, starting alongside winning goalscorer Kai Havertz in Porto.
He will compete with Richarlison, Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski for a place in Postecoglou’s frontline, with Son potentially missing five further games – including meetings with Manchester United and Manchester City – if South Korea go all the way at the Asian Cup in Qatar.
