We had a positive return of scores when it came to assessing the performances of our recommended captains over the course of Gameweek 9. Erling Haaland (£14.0m) continued his record of having never gone three games running without scoring in the Premier League, finding the net and bagging 8 FPL points against Brighton. Bukayo Saka (£8.6m) picked up an assist in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw away at Chelsea, while Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) scored both of Liverpool’s goals in their win over Everton, racking up 16 fantasy points in the process.
As FPL bosses finalise their squads ahead of tonight’s deadline, we’re here to help with a run-down of the most appealing captaincy choices on the table for Gameweek 10.
Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) – LIVERPOOL vs Nottingham Forest
An incredible 52 points accrued over the past five gameweeks should tell you everything you need to know about Mohamed Salah and the form that he is in leading up to Gameweek 10. Five goals across his last three appearances in all competitions means he comes into this game full of confidence and from an FPL perspective, no player in any position boasts a higher score than his 75 points.
With seven goals and four assists in the Premier League this campaign, fantasy managers are likely to captain the Egyptian in bulk in Gameweek 10, which sees Liverpool host Nottingham Forest. Salah has found the net at least once in all four Premier League fixtures so far to have taken place at Anfield this season and to get maximum value out of owning him, giving Salah the armband makes sense.
Kieran Trippier (£7.0m) – Wolves vs NEWCASTLE
Despite the risk of being a defender, Kieran Trippier continues to show why he deserves to be in the debate when it comes to being one of the best captain options at the moment. The England international is contributing returns at both ends of the pitch, whether it be through clean sheets, or whether it be through assists. Last time out, Trippier recorded his sixth assist across the past four gameweeks, picking up 10 FPL points as Newcastle defeated Crystal Palace 4-0.
Since the start of Gameweek 5, Trippier has accumulated 54 fantasy points and his 10-point-haul in Gameweek 9 saw him regain his place as the highest-scoring defensive asset available. Gameweek 10 will be a tough examination for Trippier and Newcastle, who travel to an in-form Wolves. But the consistency of the 33-year-old makes him fixture-proof from an FPL perspective and a worthy captaincy option.
Erling Haaland (£14.0m) – Man Utd vs MAN CITY
Doubts regarding Erling Haaland’s form were firmly extinguished come Gameweek 9 as the Norwegian got back on the scoresheet against Brighton with a brutal low strike from just outside the box. It was the Norwegian’s first goal following consecutive Premier League blanks and took his overall goal tally this season in the top flight to nine goals. He is also still among the top five highest FPL scorers after nine gameweeks.
Gameweek 10 sees the Manchester derby contested as Man City make the extremely short journey to Old Trafford. Haaland comes into the match on the back of having bagged a brace in midweek against Young Boys in the Champions League. His exceedingly large ownership makes him likely to be one of the most captained Gameweek 10 players despite the difficulty of the fixture, but a player of Haaland’s class can score multiple goals against any side, enhancing his captaincy appeal.
Jarrod Bowen (£7.4m) – WEST HAM vs Everton
Once again, Jarrod Bowen was on the scoresheet away from home in Gameweek 9, despite West Ham falling to a resounding 4-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. The Hammers were second best against Unai Emery’s side, but Bowen’s penchant for shooting outside the box was rewarded as a long-range shot took a wicked deflection and nestled into the corner of the net. Bowen ended Gameweek 9 with 8 FPL points and 58 overall, the joint-third highest score among midfielders. He has also netted in every Premier League fixture featuring West Ham so far this campaign.
Bowen and his side return to London Stadium in Gameweek 10 as Everton make the journey down south. Although Bowen’s record is not as strong as home, he has still netted once already this season on his own patch. Over the course of the past nine gameweeks, the attacking winger boasts six goals and one assist and against a Toffees side with just one clean sheet across nine league fixtures, this bodes well for him and West Ham.
