With the Gameweek 5 deadline coming up fast, we put a spotlight on Spurs defender Cristian Romero (£4.7m), who is racking up consistent FPL returns and could be well-worth owning going into the next round of Premier League fixtures.
Lionel Messi called him the “best defender in the world” during the international break! But Romero is quietly making a name for himself as a very reliable fantasy asset this season under Ange Postecoglou at Spurs. The centre-back has already shown that he offers points through multiple avenues.
After four gameweeks, the lowest of the four FPL scores accrued by Romero has been 6 points in Gameweek 2, which saw him part of the Spurs backline which successfully shut-out Man Utd. Aside from that, the Argentinian has racked up three 7-point-scores, giving him an overall total of 27 fantasy points, the highest of any defender so far this campaign.
As mentioned, key to Romero’s appeal is his attacking threat from set pieces. He already boasts two Premier League goals this season against Brentford and Burnley respectively, which made up for the loss of clean sheets in both matches and ensured that he still acquired a healthy number of points.
Gameweek 5 sees Spurs return to North London following consecutive away fixtures, with newly promoted Sheffield Utd the visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Blades have accrued just one point so far this season and have conceded at least once in each fixture that they’ve played. This underlines Romero’s appeal at both ends of the pitch with the potential of a significant haul should he keep the visitors from scoring, but also get involved in the opposition penalty area. Whilst Romero’s FPL ownership is still relatively modest, the 25-year-old should be seen as excellent value ahead of Gameweek 5 with a price-tag below £5.0m.
