Jarrad Branthwaite capitalised on calamitous Liverpool defending as Everton took the lead in the 27th minute of the Merseyside derby on Wednesday and left their arch-rivals’ Premier League title hopes in peril.
The visitors passed up numerous chances to clear their lines as the ball bounced around their box, allowing the unlikely figure of towering centre-back Branthwaite to steer in the close-range opener.
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville accused Liverpool of being “naive” and coming off second in a physical battle during a dreadful start for the team in third place.

“Liverpool are losing out badly at this time,” Neville said, analysing Branthwaite’s goal on Sky Sports.
“Everton just keep it alive. They’ve been outstanding, the whole team – electric for 27 minutes.”
Liverpool ‘in real game’ at Everton
The goal was subject to a lengthy VAR (Video Assistant Referee) check for offside. Everton had already been denied a penalty for that offence when Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson clipped Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
“With VAR, you get two chances to celebrate,” quipped Neville. “The problem with VAR is they’re scared to death, so they take their time over things.
“It’s been fantastic to watch. Liverpool are in a real game to keep their title challenge alive.”

Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Fulham on Sunday was their first in three league games, leaving them three points behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand and a sizeable goal inferiority.
The race for first is in Manchester City’s hands because the holders, who visit Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday, are four points behind the Gunners with two extra matches to play.
Everton were seeking a third win in four matches following their 2-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Victory would send Sean Dyche’s side four points clear of the relegation zone with four matches remaining and a significant goal superiority to third-bottom Luton Town.
