Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes the level of competition in the Premier League is “increasing and unprecedented” as more teams challenge for the top spots.
As Arsenal prepare to face Newcastle at the weekend, a team now challenging for the top spots in the league following their Saudi takeover, there is a lot more competition for the usual cohort of clubs as they attempt to end Manchester City’s period of domination.
Speaking ahead of the trip to St James’ Park, the Arsenal boss was asked about the increase in competitiveness.
He said: “What has happened in the last five years in this league is unprecedented.
“The level of the teams is increasing.”
The match against Newcastle comes after a 3-1 defeat to fellow Premier League side West Ham United in the week, resulting in the London side being knocked out of the EFL Cup.
Arteta also provided an injury update ahead of the clash with Gabriel Martinelli confirmed to be ready to play, Martin Odegaard will train today, and Emile Smith Rowe still facing weeks out.
“We have another training session, so there is a possibility [some players may return], but I don’t know.
“Nothing has changed with Emile Smith Rowe – he will be out for weeks.
“We’ll see how he progresses. It’s a big blow because he was getting some minutes.”
